graphic warning of scam text messages

Be aware of scam relating to the Winter Fuel Payment.

The text claimed to be a reminder from the Department for Work & Pensions (DWP), stating that according to its records, they had not yet sent in their application for this year’s “winter fuel allowance”. Failure to apply would mean they would not be eligible for this year’s payment.

The UK Government has recently announced a U-turn on the Winter Fuel Payment, making it understandably plausible that you may need to do something to make sure you get what you are owed. But this is NOT a genuine prompt, it is a scam. Please do not click on any link contained within the text message.

In addition, the allowance is devolved to the Scottish Government and is known here as the Pension Age Winter Heating Payment. It will be paid automatically next winter by the Scottish Government / Social Security Scotland, and not by the DWP.
